Religious Education
Religious Education helps children explore Christianity, other religions and non-religious worldviews, while developing their ability to think deeply about belief, meaning, values and how people live.
As a Church of England school, Christianity is at the heart of our RE curriculum. Children also encounter Judaism, Hinduism, Islam and Humanism, helping them develop knowledge and understanding of different ways of believing and living, ask thoughtful questions and reflect on their own ideas and experiences.
How we teach Religious Education
Our RE curriculum follows Living Difference IV, the agreed syllabus for Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton. As a Church of England school, we also use Understanding Christianity to deepen children’s understanding of Christianity.
Children explore RE through a cycle of enquiry. Learning begins with their own experiences and questions, before exploring how religious and non-religious beliefs and ideas are understood and lived.
1. Communicate
Explore and express our own experiences and responses.
2. Apply
Consider how these ideas appear in our own lives and the lives of others.
3. Inquire
Encounter new knowledge, beliefs, stories and practices.
4. Contextualise
Explore how beliefs and ideas are lived by real people and communities.
5. Evaluate
Consider their significance and what we have learned.
What children learn in Religious Education
Our RE curriculum overview shows the units children study across Reception and our two-year cycles, and how learning builds towards the end of Years 2, 4 and 6.
Right to withdraw from Religious Education
Religious Education is taught to all pupils as part of the school curriculum. Parents and carers have the right to request that their child is withdrawn from RE. If you are considering this, please contact the Headteacher so that we can talk through our RE curriculum and discuss your request with you.
