Team R:
In Year R, we had an amazing adventure watching caterpillars grow into beautiful butterflies! We cared for them every day—feeding them, giving them water, and watching closely as they transformed. It was fascinating to see them change from tiny wriggly caterpillars into chrysalises, and finally into colourful butterflies. When the time came, we released them into the wildflowers. One magical moment was when Lucas gently carried a butterfly and placed it on the flowers. We all watched in awe! It was such an exciting experience, and we loved being part of their journey from beginning to end.
Team 1 / 2:
In a delightful fusion of literacy and science, Year 1 and 2 pupils have embarked on an interstellar journey through the realm of poetry. This innovative approach not only ignites their imagination but also enriches their vocabulary and expressive abilities.
Students began their adventure by immersing themselves in space-themed poems. These poems provided engaging content that introduced the children to the wonders of the universe. These poems served as a springboard for discussions about planets, stars, and space exploration .
After absorbing the rhythms and themes of space poetry, the children took to performing these pieces, honing their oral fluency and confidence. Inspired by their readings, they then ventured into crafting their own poems. The children incorporated vivid vocabulary—terms like ‘a forest full of stars’, ‘dazzling stars,’ ‘deafening silence all around me’ and ‘the vastness of space’ to bring their poetic visions to life .
Through this space-themed initiative, the children have not only expanded their knowledge of the universe but have also discovered the power of words to express their curiosity and creativity.
Team 3 / 4:
In our recent class science experiment, we explored whether cress seeds require soil to grow by planting them in different materials such as paper towel, soil, sand, and cotton wool. Over several days, we observed and recorded the seeds’ progress, noting that they sprouted successfully in all materials, proving soil isn’t essential for germination. Surprisingly, the seeds grown in cotton wool thrived the most, showing the strongest and healthiest growth compared to the other materials. After analyzing the results, the children concluded that while seeds can grow in various mediums, cotton wool provided the ideal balance of moisture and support for optimal growth, demonstrating that soil isn’t a strict necessity for seed germination.
Team 5 / 6:
Last week, Team 5 / 6 embarked on an unforgettable residential trip to Fairthorne Manor, and what an incredible adventure it turned out to be!
The children threw themselves into a packed schedule of activities designed to build resilience, teamwork and confidence. From kayaking across calm waters to the laughter-filled chaos of raft building, every moment was an opportunity to learn and grow together.
Many children stepped bravely out of their comfort zones as they conquered heights on the climbing wall and felt the thrill of abseiling back down. The low ropes course and initiative tests challenged them to communicate, collaborate and problem-solve – skills they mastered with impressive determination.
In the spirit of outdoor exploration, they also tried their hand at orienteering, navigating their way through the grounds with a map and compass, and practised their bushcraft skills with den building and fire lighting. One of the highlights was pioneering, where pupils worked as a team to build an impressive catapult, putting both creativity and engineering skills to the test.
Throughout the week, what shone through most was the children’s outstanding team spirit. They supported and encouraged each other, celebrated successes big and small, and showed resilience when faced with challenges.
By the end of the trip, everyone returned home a little muddy and tired, but bursting with pride and wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.
Well done, Team 5 / 6 – you should be so proud of everything you achieved at Fairthorne Manor!
