Team R:
On a hot summer afternoon, Year R children found the perfect way to cool off! They dipped their feet into refreshing ice-cold water under the shade of the big oak tree in our outside area. There were giggles and squeals as the chilly water splashed around their toes—it was a welcome break from the heat. After relaxing in the cool shade, the children were treated to delicious ice lollies, kindly brought out by Mrs Sawyer. Everyone agreed they were the best treat on such a warm day! It was a joyful, cooling experience that made summer learning even more fun.
Team 1 / 2:
This term, the children in Year 1 and 2 have been diving into British history and learning all about two of our most iconic monarchs: Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria.
The children have been exploring why these queens were such significant figures in British history. They’ve discovered how each queen led the country through times of change and challenge. They’ve looked at the big decisions each queen made and how those helped shape the Britain we know today.
We’ve been thinking about what made them great monarchs – from Elizabeth I’s strong leadership during the Spanish Armada to Queen Victoria’s role during a time of great invention and empire. The children have been fascinated by their powerful personalities and the lasting impact of their reigns.
To bring their learning together, the classes have been comparing the two queens, spotting similarities and differences in their lives, leadership styles, and the times they lived in. It’s been wonderful to see the children using historical vocabulary and sharing thoughtful ideas about leadership, fairness, and legacy.
We’re so proud of how engaged and curious the children have been – future historians in the making!
Team 3 / 4:
In Team 3/4 , we were learning about “protective factors”. Using child-friendly language and engaging characters – Harold, Kiki, and Derek – Lucy helped pupils understand how different parts of the brain work. Children learned about areas of the brain such as the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and hippocampus, and how these areas respond when we feel stressed or anxious. Through fun and relatable examples, Lucy explained how the brain sends messages to the body – and how recognising these feelings can help us manage them in healthy ways.
One of the highlights of the workshop was exploring the Wellness Wheels, which link physical and mental health. Pupils worked together to support our friend Derek, who was feeling overwhelmed, by finding positive ways to deal with his challenges.
The workshops were a fantastic mix of science, emotional awareness, and practical strategies for well-being – all presented in a fun, accessible way. A big thank you to Lucy and the SCARF team for bringing mental health learning to life!
Team 5 / 6:
Year 5/6 have been getting hands-on with square and cube numbers using multilink cubes. It’s been a fun and practical way to explore these tricky concepts!
To start with, we looked at square numbers and discussed how a number multiplied by itself results in a square number. We drew some examples of square numbers in our maths books. Then we moved on to cube numbers, which meant stacking multilink cubes to make 3D shapes. The class loved building cubes like 2x2x2 (8 cubes) and 3x3x3 (27 cubes) to see what a cube number really looks like.
The children tested out lots of numbers to see if they could be made into a cube, sorting them into examples and non-examples. There were some great discussions and teamwork as they worked out which numbers were cube numbers and which weren’t – and explained why.
