Separating in Science

Year 5/6 have been very busy... learning more about biomes in geography, separating in science, dancing with Miss Batchelor - and taking tests! Their minds and bodies will definitely need a rest after all of that! Around the school, Year 1/2 have produced fantastic front covers and whizzy writing for their brilliant stories, Year 3/4 have been learning all about magnets and Year R have been digging for pirate treasure!

Year R - Pirates Love Underpants

Year R have enjoyed reading the story, ‘Pirates Love Underpants’ and it has given them some brilliant ideas for their independent learning. We loved digging for treasure in the sand and counting how many gold coins we found. In the creative area, colour mixing to create a seascape was very popular and the children were really keen to discover what happens when you mix different amounts of blue and white paint. We put our map reading skills to the test when we went for a treasure hunt outside and have also built our own GIANT pirate ships!

Year 1/2 - Whizzy Writers

Year 1/2 have been whizzy writers this week. We have rewritten the story of Winter’s Child and have adapted the text to create our own version of ‘Spring’s Child’. We have also been experimenting with colour in art and have started to make our front covers for our books.

In Year 1, we have been learning about addition and subtraction using number lines. We have even solved missing number and word problems! Next week, Year 1/2 are looking forward to sharing their stories at the library so watch this space for photos…

Year 3/4 - Magnificent Magnets

Year 3/4 have been busy exploring the properties of magnets this week. We have designed our own investigation to discover whether the size of a magnet makes a difference to its strength. Aspen class discovered that the size does not necessarily have an impact on the strength.

Well done to our footballers, too, who enjoyed their matches at Mountbatten School.

Year 5/6 - Separating mixtures

The children have worked incredibly hard this week. The Year 6 children began their first round of SATs mock papers. They all tried their best and we are really pleased with their efforts during the week. The children completed their unit exploring the desert, tundra, taiga, marine and temperate biomes and they produced some lovely board games to present their learning. In science, the children continued to explore our materials unit separating different substances from a mixture.
