The Gruffalo to Galaxy Girl

This week has been full of exciting learning and memorable experiences across the school. Year R enjoyed a wonderful trip to Theatre Royal Winchester to watch The Gruffalo, delighting in the storytelling, music and characters brought to life on stage. In Year 1, children explored measuring length and height through practical activities, learning to compare, measure and use rulers accurately. Year 4 impressed everyone during their swimming week, developing stroke techniques, water safety skills and confidence in the pool, including jumping into the deep end for the first time. Meanwhile, Year 5/6 began their new class text, Galaxy Girl by Bev Smith, using prediction and character work to explore the story of a girl abducted by aliens who is trying to contact her mum back on Earth.

Team R:

On Monday, Year R enjoyed a fantastic trip to Theatre Royal Winchester to watch The Gruffalo. From the moment the show began, the children were completely captivated by the colourful characters, wonderful storytelling, and exciting music. There were lots of smiles, laughter, and moments of amazement as the much-loved story came to life on stage. Seeing the Gruffalo appear was a real highlight and sparked plenty of excitement. The children represented the school beautifully and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was a memorable day filled with fun, imagination, and adventure, and one that we will remember for a long time.

Year 1 Maths: Measuring Length and Height

This week, our Year 1 children have been exploring the important maths topic of measuring length and height. The children have enjoyed lots of practical, hands-on learning both inside and outside the classroom.

To begin with, the children developed their understanding by comparing objects using the correct mathematical vocabulary. They confidently used words such as longer, shorter, taller, shorter than, longer than, and equal to to describe and compare different items around the classroom.

Next, the children moved on to using non-standard units of measure. They used cubes and other objects to measure the length and height of items, carefully lining them up and counting how many units were needed. This helped them to understand that objects can be measured in different ways and that it is important to measure accurately and consistently.

Finally, the children were introduced to rulers and began learning how to use standard units of measure such as centimetres. This was an exciting step as they started to apply their measuring skills in a more formal way.

Top Tips for Using a Ruler

Here are some of the key tips the children came up with to use a ruler correctly:

  • Always start measuring from the 0 mark, not the end of the ruler
  • Make sure the ruler is placed straight along the object
  • Look carefully and read the number where the object ends
  • Use centimetres (cm) for most classroom measuring
  • Double check your measurement to make sure it is accurate

The children have shown great enthusiasm and growing confidence throughout this topic. They have enjoyed exploring, measuring and comparing, and are beginning to understand how important measuring skills are in everyday life.

Team 3 / 4:

What an incredible week of swimming for Year 4! The children showed fantastic independence and supported each other brilliantly every single day as they took on new challenges in the water.

They focused on refining their techniques across different strokes, from perfecting front crawl to finding a smooth rhythm in backstroke. The children also tackled vital water safety skills, mastering the art of treading water and sculling to keep themselves safely afloat.

The biggest highlights of the week were definitely about building confidence. Many of the swimmers braved the big pool for the first time, and they absolutely loved practising safe entries by jumping straight into the deep end!

The instructors were incredibly impressed by Year 4’s excellent listening and outstanding behaviour. Huge congratulations to all the swimmers for working so hard and facing every challenge with a massive smile!

Team 5 / 6:

So, Hi Guys! We have finally started our new text #galaxygirl by the awesome Bev Smith.

We had to do some prediction webs and character work to find out exactly who we are dealing with. It seems our main character has been abducted by aliens and is using a blog to try and contact her mum back on earth – who, apparently, is not great on the web. We really like it.

Catch you next week.
