A Taste of our Learning

This week’s blog in four words: portraits, Easter, snacks, and journalism! Team 3 / 4 were busy last week transforming their classrooms into safe, clean kitchens, ready to produce healthy afternoon snacks. They all made variations on three dips: crushed chickpea, yogurt, and salsa. Elsewhere in KS2, Team 5 / 6 took on the role of newspaper journalists, as they have been writing articles based on their class book ‘Wolf Brother’. Also in the blog, you can find pictures of Year R’s colourful, abstract self-portraits, as well as learning about Team 1 / 2’s Easter Day celebrations from last week. Read on to find out more about what the children have been up to over the week...

Year R: A burst of creativity

Armed with wax crayons and mirrors, we looked at Paul Klee’s work and set out to create self-portraits inspired by his colourful, abstract art work!

Observing ourselves closely, we picked out shapes that represented our facial features. Some chose circles for rosy cheeks, while others opted for triangles for noses. With our chosen shapes in mind, we began sketching our portraits with wax crayons, blending colors and experimenting with different techniques.

Each portrait came to life, showcasing the unique personalities within our class. It was a celebration of individuality and creativity. Our portraits are now displayed in our classroom for all to enjoy.

Year 1 / 2: RE Easter Day

Last week the children in Year 1 / 2 had a great day learning all about the Easter story. We were lucky enough to have 2 visitors from Southampton City Mission to share with us their beliefs about the Easter story.

We had some great games to help us remember the story, thinking about how the different people might have felt, and we made some beautiful Easter collages.

We ended the day with an epic Easter egg hunt!

Year 3 / 4: Healthy snacks

Last week, Year 3 / 4 scrubbed their hands and turned their classrooms into safe and clean kitchens. The learning was about healthy afterschool snacks.  This resulted in the children designing and making their dips. There were three main varieties: a yoghurt based dip, a crushed chickpea dip, and a salsa. The children chose their seasonings to make each dip an individual experience on the taste buds. Once completed, they evaluated dips made by other groups and their own. Each class enjoyed the experience and said they would be happy to make them at home!

Year 5 / 6: Newspaper journalism

This week, in Year 5 /6, we have been writing newspaper articles about the unfortunate turn of events that happened to the main character in our class book, Wolf Brother.

We have been learning to write in the style of a newspaper journalist – only adding in the most crucial information and facts about the event.

We looked at formal and informal aspects, including quotations from eyewitnesses.

Once edited, some were able to word process them.
