A Voyage of Discovery

This week on the blog: Winter walks, Titanic trips, Poetry, and Geometry!

This week, Team 1/2 enjoyed a trip to the SeaCity museum, as part of their History topic on the Titanic. They enjoyed workshops, interactive exhibits and an exploration of the museum - you can find lots of photos from their trip below! Also in the blog this week, Team R enjoyed a Winter Walk around the school grounds, whilst Team 3/4 have been crafting their own 'blackout' poems. In Team 5/6, the children have been using algebra to solve geometry problems in maths. Keep reading to find out more about what the children have been learning this week!

Team R: A Winter Welly Walk

This week, our Year R children went on a magical Winter Welly Walk, inspired by The Gruffalo. Dressed in warm clothes and wellies, they built dens for the characters Gruffalo, Mouse, Fox, Owl, and Snake using twigs, leaves, and branches. The children worked together, letting their imaginations run wild as they created cosy hideaways for each character.

After their outdoor adventure, the children enjoyed hot chocolate and hot toast, just like the characters in The Three Snow Bears. In science we are looking at melting, and the butter on hot toast was the perfect tasty experiment!

Team 1 / 2: A Voyage Through the Titanic Museum

Imagine stepping aboard the world’s most famous ship, the Titanic, without leaving the shore. That’s exactly what happened when our group of young explorers visited the Titanic Museum! Here’s a short glimpse of their unforgettable journey.

The children took part in a workshop participating in a range of activities to learn more about the Titanic. One of their highlights was using an ice cube tray which they filled with water to demonstrate how the Titanic’s watertight compartments caused the ship to split in half.

One of the Museum staff gave us a guided tour around the museum where the children could hunt for fascinating facts and ask her all the questions that they could think of.

Another highlight was exploring the Interactive exhibits where they could steer the ship, shovel coal, peek into recreated cabins and learn how to send messages via morse code.

The Sea City Museum gave us more than just a fun day out; it sparked a sense of wonder about the ocean and its history. For young adventurers, it was a trip full of discoveries they won’t soon forget. We can’t wait for our next adventure!

Team 3 / 4: Blackout Poems

This week, Team 3/4 have been writing ‘blackout poems’.  These are part of the ‘found poetry’ style of writing.  The children read some published examples before planning and writing their own.  Firstly, they read a piece of text either an existing poem or piece of nonfiction text. The children then used a pencil to circle the words & phrases they wanted to include in their poem.  After they had read it a number of times, the children then marked the text in a heavier pencil or felt tip before blacking out the rest of the unused dialogue with pictures, images and patterns.  The effect is quite beautiful as you can see.

Team 5 / 6: Circles and Algebra

Team 5/6 have been investigating circles and doing some algebra this week! They started by illustrating and naming parts of a circle. Then they were able to work on using the relationship between the radius and diameter to solve maths problems. Using the maths equation d = 2 x r was easier than we thought!
