Amazing Architecture

In the blog this week, Team 1/2 have conquered time with clock reading, while Team 3/4 explored bone strength through ingenious straw experiments. Art class, in Team 5/6, echoed Zaha Hadid's influence, as they sketched a visionary studio on the school field. Who knows…. maybe one day we can bring their ideas to reality?

Year R: Exploring beyond the classroom: An adventure around our school grounds

We embarked on an exciting journey beyond the familiar walls of our classrooms this week. Armed with curiosity and a checklist in hand, our Year R students eagerly set out on a walk to explore the surrounding neighborhood. Excitement rippled through the air as the children eagerly pointed out different bus stops, bungalows and road signs. The children embraced the challenge of spotting and identifying different features, and once found they eagerly ticked off each sign on their checklist. The walk turned into a delightful game of discovery, as the children eagerly shouted out when they found a new sign to add to their collection. Our walk fostered a sense of connection to our community. It was an afternoon filled with joy and learning– a reminder that sometimes, the best lessons are learned outside the classroom.

Year 1 /2: Exploring time

This week in Year 1 / 2, our learners are embarking on an exciting journey of exploring time, with a particular focus on telling the time to o’clock and half past. The children enjoyed using the clock faces to show their learning. We have also been drip-feeding telling the time throughout the day and talking about the date by using our days of the week and month of the year knowledge.

Year 3 / 4: Investigating bone structure

In our Science lessons, Year 3 / 4 have been continuing their work on skeletons and living things.  To investigate how bones can be so strong yet so lightweight, the children carried out some fair testing using straws and a 1kg weight.  They measured and cut paper straws to 10cm in length and counted how many straws were needed to lift the weight up without any pf the straws bending. We discovered that the trick was to make sure that all of the straws were touching to create a honeycomb effect.  The children found that it only took between 9 – 12 straws to lift the weight! Through further observation of the inside or real bones, everyone saw that bones do indeed have a honeycomb structure inside them which gives them their strength.  It was great to do such a simple experiment that led to some clear scientific learning!

Year 5 / 6: Zaha Hadid inspired building designs

This week in Art, we have been taking inspiration from the ‘starchitect’ Zaha Hadid. We have studied her style, techniques and visual language. Our aim was to sketch a DT and Art studio in her style – to theoretically be situated on the school field. It needed to be a fluid design that would blend into its surroundings and give the feeling of space. Here’s a look at our initial sketches!
