Art, Dragons, and Mummies!

This week, students showcased their creativity through a variety of projects. Our Team R students have had a brilliant week, settling in, enjoying lunch, and starting PE and phonics. Team 1/2 channeled Pablo Picasso, making unique Cubist self-portraits with oil pastels. Team 3/4 writers were inspired by Jackie Morris's "Tell Me a Dragon," practicing descriptive language to imagine their own fantastical creatures. Finally, Team 5/6 students got a truly hands-on history lesson, becoming Egyptologists for a day by carefully mummifying bananas to understand ancient burial rituals.

Team R:

We are so proud of how well Year R have settled this week! All the children have successfully stayed for lunch, eaten brilliantly, and impressively not a single tray has been dropped! It’s been lovely having everyone together at lunchtime. This week also saw our first PE session with the coach, where the children had great fun throwing and catching balls both indoors and outside. We’ve completed a full week of phonics too, and the children are doing a fantastic job learning their sounds. A big well done to all we’re off to a brilliant start!

Team 1 / 2:

This week in Art, our Year 1 and 2 children explored the wonderful world of Pablo Picasso, our focus artist. We learned all about how Picasso used abstract art to express himself, creating portraits that looked very different from real life.

The children had a fantastic time creating their own abstract self-portraits, inspired by Picasso’s unique Cubist style. They used a variety of shapes to form their faces, eyes, noses, and mouths, even sometimes putting features in unusual places to make their work really stand out!

To finish, the children brought their portraits to life by using bright oil pastels, adding colour and character to their wonderful creations.

Team 3 / 4:

This week, our Year 3/4 writers embarked on an exciting new journey into the magical world of dragons, inspired by Jackie Morris’s beautifully illustrated book, Tell Me a Dragon. The book, filled with poetic language and enchanting creatures, was the perfect way to spark our imaginations and launch our first writing topic of the year.

Using only the words they heard, each student drew the dragon being described. They then added annotations to explain the features they included, based on the language in the poem.

This activity helped the children understand how authors use descriptive language to create vivid images. It also gave them a chance to begin thinking creatively about the dragons they will soon be writing about in their own poems.

We’re looking forward to seeing their ideas develop in the coming weeks!

Team 5 / 6:

Our Year 5/6 Egyptologists have been busy honing their embalming skills as part of our Ancient Egypt project by mummifying bananas! The process began with each team carefully cleaning and polishing their ‘banana body’ before using a skewer to carefully scrape the ‘brains’ out through the nose. Next, they made an incision to extract the internal organs, heavily salted the skin to dry it out, and stuffed the cavity with sawdust to help the banana keep its shape. Once preserved, they got creative, decorating the body with symbolic makeup and jewels before the final, solemn act of wrapping it in ceremonial tissue paper linens and laying it to rest in a beautifully decorated miniature sarcophagus. It was a wonderfully hands-on way to understand the complex rituals of the afterlife!
