Team R:
This week in Year R, we have continued our exciting space theme! In History, we have been learning about Tim Peake, the British astronaut. We found out lots of interesting facts about his amazing trip to the International Space Station and what it is like to live and work in space. In DT, we explored the moon buggy and looked carefully at how it moves. Then we designed and made our very own moon buggies! We used saws carefully to create the axles, making sure we wore our safety goggles. After that, we added our wheels, painted our buggies, and were so proud of our finished creations! 🚀🌙✨
Team 1 / 2:
Team 1/2 Become Historians
This term, our Team 1/2 children have been busy stepping back in time and becoming historians! As part of our history learning, the children have been exploring the Great Fire of London and discovering what life was like in 1666.
A big focus of our learning so far, has been using images as historical evidence. The children carefully looked at paintings, drawings and illustrations from the time and talked about what they could see. They asked great historical questions such as “What is happening in this picture?”, “What clues does it give us about the past?” and “How is this different from today?” It has been wonderful to see them developing these important observation and thinking skills.
We also explored how fires were fought in the past. The children were fascinated to learn that there were no fire engines or hoses! Instead, people used leather buckets, fire hooks to pull down buildings, and bucket chains to try to stop the fire spreading. Comparing these methods to modern firefighting helped the children understand just how challenging and dangerous fires were in the past.
The children showed fantastic enthusiasm, curiosity and thoughtful discussion throughout the lesson.
Team 3 / 4:
This week, Year 3 & 4 have been exploring the Art Deco style. The children used bold shapes, strong lines, and repeating patterns to create striking wallpaper designs inspired by real Art Deco artwork. They noticed that Art Deco often uses shapes like fans, triangles, and rectangles, arranged in neat and eye-catching ways.
They began by taking their time to play with shape and line, experimenting with different ideas before deciding on their final design. Some children tried many different patterns first, while others focused on one shape and added details to make it unique. Once their design was ready, they carefully repeated it across the page to create a full wallpaper effect.
The finished artworks are bold, bright, and full of energy. These Art Deco-inspired designs really show how much fun can come from exploring shapes, lines, and repetition — and just how creative our Year 3 & 4 artists can be!
Team 5 / 6:
Football Tournament
Last Friday, three football teams were taken to Mountbatten for the annual year 5/6 football league. Coach Maltby and Mr Brown could not have been more proud of all the players and their displays of skill, sportsmanship, fairplay and independence. Each team took a copy of their game sheet to take charge of who and where they were playing when. The teams also independently took charge of their own substitutions to ensure a fair rotation of players throughout the afternoon. Everyone took on this responsibility amazingly well and the adults were extremely impressed with how organised and mature every single player was. Again, I cannot emphasise enough how proud we are of how well everyone involved behaved – they represented our school to the highest possible standard. Team A, having only lost 1 game, came out with a very closely contested bronze medal. Team C, who scored an almost uncountable amount of total goals, won the second league!
The players were all fantastic! Thank you to the parents that managed to get them all there. Every child that went should be so pleased with how they performed both individually and as a team. Well done!
