Planets, the Past and Powerful Learning!

This week, children across the school have been immersed in exciting and meaningful learning. Team R explored the solar system through their book ‘Meet the Planets!’ learning fascinating facts and expressing their creativity through art and storytelling. Team 1/2 became historians, investigating the Great Fire of London and using historical images to develop questioning and observation skills. Team 3/4 deepened their understanding of the Hindu faith, exploring traditions, clothing and beliefs, and learning about the meaning of the Bindi. Meanwhile, Team 5/6 researched comets, meteors, asteroids and meteorites, creating detailed and imaginative posters to showcase their scientific knowledge. It has been a fantastic week of curiosity, creativity and discovery across all year groups.

Team R:

This week in our Year R cohort, we blasted off into space with our core book Meet the Planets! We explored the solar system and discovered so many exciting facts. We learned that Mercury is super fast as it whizzes around the Sun, Venus is covered in lots of volcanoes, and Earth has beautiful oceans and tall mountains. We also talked about the other planets and what makes each one special.

To bring our learning to life, we mixed colours to paint our own planets, created rockets using different shapes, and had lots of fun retelling the story together. What an out-of-this-world week! 🚀✨

Team 1 / 2:

Team 1/2 Become Historians

This term, our Team 1/2 children have been busy stepping back in time and becoming historians! As part of our history learning, the children have been exploring the Great Fire of London and discovering what life was like in 1666.

A big focus of our learning so far, has been using images as historical evidence. The children carefully looked at paintings, drawings and illustrations from the time and talked about what they could see. They asked great historical questions such as “What is happening in this picture?”, “What clues does it give us about the past?” and “How is this different from today?” It has been wonderful to see them developing these important observation and thinking skills.

We also explored how fires were fought in the past. The children were fascinated to learn that there were no fire engines or hoses! Instead, people used leather buckets, fire hooks to pull down buildings, and bucket chains to try to stop the fire spreading. Comparing these methods to modern firefighting helped the children understand just how challenging and dangerous fires were in the past.

The children showed fantastic enthusiasm, curiosity and thoughtful discussion throughout the lesson.

Team 3 / 4:

As part of our RE curriculum in Year 3 and 4  we have found out more about different faiths within our community- focusing on the Hindu faith.

This week Mrs Mukherjee kindly bought some Hindu clothes to school and talked to us about what Hindus might wear for traditional dress or when visiting the Temple.

Year 3 and 4 have been “digging deeper” and finding out more about the Hindu faith and the ways in which they worship, contrasting them with personal beliefs they might hold .

There was much fun  and lots of laughter as they saw Mrs Tompkins and Mrs Phelps dressed in a Saree, saw their friends dress up in traditional Hindu attire and wore Bindi spots ( the traditional Hindu spot as a sign of faith) on their foreheads.  We learnt that the Bindi spot  signifies the “ajna chakra” (third eye), representing intuition, wisdom, and spiritual focus.

Team 5 / 6:

Team 5/6 have been researching comets, meteors, asteroids and meteorites as part of their science learning. They have been finding out how these objects form, how they travel through space and the impact they can have on Earth. Using their research, the children created their own informative posters to share their knowledge in a clear and engaging way. The finished posters are full of interesting facts and include some truly fabulous illustrations, showing both their scientific understanding and creativity.
