Futurism and Freeze Frames

This week on the blog: Gardening, Balancing, Freeze Frames, and Futurism...

This week, Team 5/6 have been looking at the work of Futurist artist Umberto Boccioni, and have begun the process of creating their own 'moving sculptures', inspired by the movement and speed shown in his work. You can find photos of the children's creations so far below in this week's blog. Also in the blog, Team 3/4 have been using freeze frames to help them explore stories, whilst Team 1/2 have been developing their coordination and strength through balances and counter-balances in PE. Meanwhile in Team R, the children have been learning how to care for their outdoor area. Keep reading to find out more about what the children have been learning this week!

Team R: Caring for our learning environment

This week the YR children had a fun, hands-on lesson as they spent time weeding in the outdoor area. With small gloves and spades in hand, they eagerly dug into the soil, carefully pulling out weeds. This activity helped them learn about the importance of taking care of plants and the environment. The children worked together, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, while also developing their fine motor skills. Worms, ladybugs and millipedes were the highlights of our week. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to connect with nature, while fostering teamwork and responsibility in a playful, engaging way!

Team 1 / 2: Brilliant balances

Over the past few weeks in PE the children have been practicing balances and counterbalances to improve coordination, strength, and confidence. Balance exercises, like standing on one leg or walking along a line, enhance stability whilst counterbalance activities, such as partner work, teach cooperation and body awareness. These skills support physical development and foster teamwork, whilst also promoting social interaction. By incorporating fun games and challenges the children find these lessons engaging, helping children to build a solid foundation for future physical activities and lifelong fitness.

Team 3 / 4: Freeze frames

In their reading lessons, Team 3/4 have been diving into the exciting world of Viking tales from the book Dragon’s Hoard by Lari Don. These stories are packed with adventure, bravery, and fascinating characters, and the children have been loving every page! One of the key skills they’ve been developing is summarising the main points of a story. To put this skill into action, they focused on the tale Sailing to America—a thrilling story about courage, adventure, and the journey to a new land.

The children were challenged to identify the twelve key parts of the story and then bring them to life using freeze frames. If you’re wondering what a freeze frame is, think of it like pressing pause on a movie to capture the most important moments. The children acted out each scene, holding their poses like statues to create a living snapshot of the story. It was a fantastic way to combine reading, creativity, and teamwork!

Team 5 / 6: Futurist designs

Team 5/6 have been exploring the art movement of Futurism. They learnt that artists who were part of this movement wanted to show the modern world, especially technology, as well as movement and speed. They looked at Umberto Boccioni as their spotlight artist. The children used cardboard cut-outs to help them to design their own clay ‘moving sculpture’ in the style of Boccioni and the futurist movement.
