Healthy Minds, Happy Hearts!

This week, Year R enjoyed a fun SCARF workshop with Gerald the Giraffe, learning how food, water, sleep, exercise and fresh air help keep us healthy. Year 1/2 became geographers, exploring Rownhams to identify human and physical features before creating their own maps of the local area and school. Year 3/4 delighted families with a wonderful violin concert, proudly showcasing the musical skills, confidence and teamwork they have developed through weekly practice. Meanwhile, Year 5/6 celebrated JOY Day, reflecting on the importance of kindness, compassion and giving to others. Inspired by The Good Samaritan, they created affirmation stars filled with thoughtful messages for their classmates, reminding everyone that sharing kind words and caring for others brings happiness to our whole school community.

Team R:

This week, Year R enjoyed a fantastic SCARF workshop where they met Gerald the Giraffe and learned all about their amazing bodies. The children explored what our bodies need to survive, including food, water, air, sleep, and exercise. Through fun activities, stories, and discussions, they discovered how to keep themselves healthy and happy. The children were eager to share their ideas and showed great enthusiasm throughout the session. Meeting Gerald made the learning even more exciting and memorable. We were very proud of how well the children listened, participated, and demonstrated their growing understanding of healthy living.

Team 1 / 2:

Year 1 & 2 Geography Walk Around Rownhams

This week, Year 1 and Year 2 became geographers as they explored our local area to answer the question:

“Does Rownhams have more human features or physical features?”

Armed with their observation skills, the children enjoyed a walk around Rownhams, identifying and discussing the different features they could see. Along the way, they spotted a variety of human features, including footpaths, lots of different types of houses, the Premier Inn, two pubs, the park and, of course, our school! They also found physical features, such as the pond, and talked about the differences between features that occur naturally and those that have been built by people.

Back in the classroom, the children continued their geographical learning by exploring different maps of the local area. They discovered what places look like from an aerial view before creating their own ‘messy maps’ to help develop their mapping skills. To deepen their understanding, they drew around classroom objects to see how things appear from above before creating their own maps of the school grounds and parts of the Rownhams area.

It was wonderful to see the children developing their observation, mapping and geographical vocabulary while learning more about the community around them. We are very proud of the enthusiasm and curiosity they showed throughout the day!

Team 3 / 4:

This week, our Year 3/4 children proudly showcased the results of their hard work and dedication during their violin concert.

Over the past few weeks, the children have been practising every week, developing their playing techniques, building their confidence, and learning to perform together as an ensemble. Their commitment and perseverance were evident throughout every performance.

Each class took it in turn to perform a selection of pieces, giving families and staff the opportunity to celebrate the fantastic progress the children have made. The concert highlighted not only their growing musical skills but also their enthusiasm, teamwork, and enjoyment of learning a new instrument.

It was wonderful to see how much confidence the children have gained since they first picked up their violins. Performing in front of an audience is a significant achievement, and every child should be incredibly proud of what they accomplished.

A huge well done to all of our talented Year 3/4 musicians for their excellent performances, and thank you to everyone who came along to support them. Congratulations to all involved on a fantastic concert!

Team 5 / 6:

Our Year 5/6 students recently took part in a truly heartwarming event: our annual JOY Day celebration! This special day was all about shifting our focus from receiving to giving, and exploring the powerful idea that the joy we share with others is often the most rewarding joy of all.

We kicked off our day by watching the timeless story of ‘The Good Samaritan’, which sparked some fantastic discussions. The children explored the story’s powerful message, diving deep into questions about the characters’ actions and, most importantly, the Samaritan’s motivation. The key takeaway was that the Samaritan didn’t just give things; he gave his time, care, and compassion—a gift that made the injured man feel seen and valued. Our students reflected on the incredible power of kindness and what it truly means to be compassionate.

To put this idea into practice, we created our own positive affirmation activity. Each student decorated a paper star with their name and then passed it around the class. Their classmates filled the stars with specific, joyful messages about what makes them special. From remembering a time they received a helping hand to celebrating a moment of courage on the sports field, the messages were a beautiful reminder of the wonderful community we have here at school.

It was a truly uplifting experience, with every child receiving their star back, full of kindness and appreciation. JOY Day was a powerful reminder that there is immense joy in giving, and that a few kind words can make a world of difference. It was a fantastic celebration of our school values, and we are so proud of our Year 5/6 students for embracing the spirit of the day so wholeheartedly.
