Exploring Our World

From Year R through to Year 6, children have enjoyed a fantastic week of learning and enrichment. Year R stepped back in time as they opened a mysterious box from the past, sparking their curiosity and imagination as they began exploring fossils and artefacts. Team 1/2 celebrated Joy Day by reflecting on kindness through the Good Samaritan, creating thank-you cards for community helpers and planning fundraising for the Play Team at Southampton Children’s Hospital. Team 3/4 visited Southampton City Art Gallery, exploring a range of artistic styles before creating their own clay portrait busts. Inspired by England’s World Cup campaign, Team 5/6 designed colourful, healthy pasta salads to fuel top performance. Across the school, children demonstrated creativity, compassion, curiosity and enthusiasm.

Team R:

Year R became history detectives as they opened a mysterious History Box, sparking lots of excitement and curiosity! Inside, the children discovered a fascinating collection of fossils, old tools and clothing from the past. They carefully explored each object, sharing their ideas about what they might have been used for and asking thoughtful questions about the people who once used them. This hands-on experience encouraged the children to think like historians, using clues to learn about life long ago. The History Box inspired wonderful discussions and imaginative learning, and we can’t wait to see where their journey into the past takes them next.

Joy Day in Team 1/2 – Spreading Joy Through Kindness

Team 1/2 had a wonderful time celebrating Joy Day, exploring what it means to live out our school value of joy through our vision of “Me, My Community, Our World.”

Throughout the day, the children reflected on how joy is not just about feeling happy, but about sharing kindness, showing compassion and making a positive difference to others.

We began by learning about the Good Samaritan, thinking carefully about how one person’s choice to stop and help someone in need brought hope and joy. The children discussed how they can follow this example in their own lives by choosing kindness, helping others and including everyone.

As part of our focus on My Community, the children created thoughtful thank you cards for the many adults who help make Team Rownhams such a special place. From local community members to those who work hard to support others every day, the children enjoyed expressing their gratitude and recognising the difference these people make.

Our learning then extended to Our World as we thought about how we could spread joy beyond our school and village. The children were inspired to think of ways they could raise money for the Play Team at Southampton Children’s Hospital, helping to provide toys, games and activities that bring comfort and smiles to children spending time in hospital. They came up with some fantastic fundraising ideas and are excited to put their plans into action.

Watch this space for more information about our upcoming fundraising event—we can’t wait to share how our Team 1/2 children will be spreading joy in our wider community!

We are incredibly proud of the kindness, empathy and enthusiasm the children showed throughout Joy Day. They demonstrated that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference, helping to spread joy from Me, to My Community, and into Our World.

Team 3 / 4:

Team 3/4 turned into real art critics this week during their fantastic trip to Southampton City Art Gallery. They explored a huge mix of styles across the different galleries, including impressionism, abstract art, photography, and an exciting contemporary exhibition by Emma Richardson. It was wonderful to hear the children discussing famous artists like Monet, Degas, Lowry, and Antony Gormley, comparing the traditional portrait paintings with the modern sculptures and installations. They also got hands-on in a practical sculpture workshop, learning the specific skills needed to mould, shape and manipulate clay to create their very own portrait busts.

Team 5 / 6:

Following the unbeatable energy of England in their World Cup efforts, Year 5/6 have endeavoured to create a healthy meal that would support the team. We challenged them to produce a bright and colourful, healthy, energy boosting pasta based salad. I think the pictures speak for themselves…Come on England!
