Plants, Past and Perseverance!

This week Year R enjoyed becoming little gardeners, planting sunflower seeds and learning what plants need to grow. The children showed great teamwork, curiosity, and care while developing their fine motor skills. Year 1/2 had an exciting and memorable trip to Marwell Zoo, where they explored different habitats, discovered fascinating animals, and learned more about wildlife and conservation through hands-on experiences. Meanwhile, Year 3/4 stepped back in time with an engaging Anglo-Saxon artefacts workshop. The children loved dressing up, handling historical objects, and learning how archaeologists uncover clues about the past. Year 5/6 impressed everyone with their determination and positivity during SATs week, balancing hard work with creative activities, science, art, and plenty of fun celebrations together.

Team R:

This week YR’s became little gardeners by learning how to plant sunflower seeds. First, the children filled small pots with soft soil and gently pressed one seed into each pot. They carefully covered the seeds with soil and sprinkled water on top. We talked about how sunlight, water, and patience help plants grow strong and tall. The children were excited to imagine colourful sunflowers blooming in the future. Planting seeds helped develop fine motor skills, listening skills, and curiosity about nature. Everyone showed wonderful teamwork and care while learning about the life cycle of a plant during our gardening activity.

Team 1 / 2:

Team 1/2 had a fantastic day at Marwell Zoo! We were very excited to explore the zoo and learn all about animals from around the world.

During our trip, we discovered lots of different animal habitats and talked about why animals live in certain environments. We visited the tropical house and spotted lots of amazing plants growing in the warm, humid climate. The children enjoyed learning how these plants help create habitats for rainforest animals.

We also became super scientists by learning about animal classification and discussing the different features of mammals, reptiles and birds.

Some of the children’s favourite animals to see were the tiger, giraffes, sloth and the adorable baby rhino! Everyone loved sharing facts about the animals and asking thoughtful questions throughout the day.

We had a wonderful day full of learning, laughter and adventure. The children were beautifully behaved and represented the school brilliantly. Well done, Team 1/2!

Team 3 / 4:

Learning about the Anglo Saxons

Year 3 and 4 were lucky this week to have the history artefacts box from Hampshire History Services as part of their learning about the Anglo Saxons in Britain.

The children have already explored where the Anglo Saxons came from and that they came to England seeking land by boat. The children learned that they settled on the east coast of England before travelling inland to places such as Wessex, near Southampton and Winchester and that some of the places still have Anglo Saxon names. For example ‘ton’ meant farm as in Southampton and ‘ham’ meant village as in Rownhams.

Archaeologists have found artefacts from the Anglo Saxon times, but unlike the Romans, much of their building and everyday items were made from wood which has since rotted away.  Archaeologists have found clay and metal remnants – such as broaches and spear heads – from which they have been able to piece together clues about life in this time.

This week we looked at the artefacts from Anglo Saxon times. The children loved dressing up and handling the things which were used or remnants which tell us about life at this time. All the children seemed shocked at the weight of the Anglo Saxon helmet (worn by rich warriors in battle) and most said they wouldn’t have liked wearing it all the time!

There was a real buzz in the classrooms and great fun was had learning about the past.

Some children in Aspen class said ……

“ I liked looking at the artefacts. The helmet was really heavy, it would have been hard to wear in the battle and might have slipped off!”

“ I like dressing up- the clothes smelt a bit – maybe of the earth and the fires or maybe worms!”

“ I liked learning about everyday items. I learned they had clay pots and cooked a big pot over the fire.”

“ I liked learning they used stamps to mark their cooking pots and marks called runes to write symbols not letters”

“ Things have changed a lot!

“ The clothes looked good, it was fun dressing up.”

“I learnt that things have changed a lot – some things are only the metal bits that are left”

“ It helped me to picture in my mind what our ancestors would have worn”.

“ I liked looking at the clothes and the charm which kept away evil spirits.”

“It was fun seeing my friends dress up as well.”

“ It was fun learning about how different they were, now we have brightly coloured things but then they dyed things from natural pigments like plants in those times.”

Team 5 / 6:

This week, Year 6 have worked incredibly hard during their SATs week and we are all so proud of the determination, resilience and positive attitude they have shown. The children have approached each test with maturity and confidence, supporting one another and giving their very best effort throughout the week – well done Year 6!

Although the week has been full of hard work, we have also made sure to enjoy some well-earned treats and fun activities together. The mornings included a few special surprises to help everyone relax and start the day with a smile, and the afternoons gave us time to celebrate all of the children’s effort and teamwork. One highlight was definitely our very energetic conga line, which brought lots of laughter and fun!

We have also continued to enjoy some of our favourite subjects during the afternoons, including Art and Science. The children loved getting creative and working together on exciting activities after such focused mornings.

It has been a fantastic week filled with perseverance, positivity and plenty of smiles. We are incredibly proud of all the children for the way they have tackled SATs week — they truly deserve to celebrate their hard work and success!
