Small Acts, BIG Impact!

It’s been another wonderful week of learning, creativity and community spirit! Team R have explored harvest through beautiful paintings, while Team 1/2 celebrated Responsibility Day, taking inspiration from Sir David Attenborough to discover how we can care for our world. Team 3/4 have developed their persuasive writing skills through A Tale of Two Beasts, writing thoughtful letters in character. Team 5/6 combined design, technology and science to create exciting fairground rides, sharing their creations with families before visiting Paultons Park. We also came together for a special Harvest Festival, led beautifully by Year 2, celebrating gratitude, kindness and generosity. Thank you to everyone who donated to Southampton City Mission’s Basics Bank. Together, we continue to live our school promise: Me, my community, our world!

Team R:

As part of Responsibility Day, Year R learned all about Jamie Oliver and his work to encourage children to enjoy healthy, nutritious school meals. We talked about what makes a balanced meal and thought about how we can show responsibility by helping others in our local community. We linked our learning to our Harvest Festival and discussed how our food donations could support families who may be struggling. The children decorated beautiful boxes ready for the donated food and worked together to sort the items into different categories, including tinned foods and dried foods. We were so proud of their teamwork and kindness!

Team 1 / 2:

Responsibility Day – Caring for Our World 🌍

Team 1/2 had a wonderful time celebrating Responsibility Day as part of our learning about our school values.

We began by learning about the courageous advocate Sir David Attenborough and how he has spent his life helping people discover just how incredible our planet is and why it is so important to protect it.

Inspired by his work, the children went on a walk around our school grounds, looking carefully at the areas they love and talking about what makes them special. They then became documentary makers, creating their own short films to explain why they love these places and what we can do to look after them.

In the afternoon, the children created some fantastic posters all about David Attenborough and his important work.

Throughout the day, we thought about how responsibility means taking action to make a positive difference. We were so proud to see the children sharing their ideas and recognising that even small actions can help us care for our school, our community and our world.

Together, we can all make a difference! 💚

Team 3 / 4:

In writing, Team 3/4 have been exploring perspective through Fiona Roberton’s A Tale of Two Beasts, looking at how the same events can be understood quite differently depending on who is telling the story. For their final outcome, the children wrote letters in character as the Girl, addressing Fang directly to explain her side of the story and persuade him that she meant no harm. The children structured their writing by opening with her reason for writing, explaining her caring intentions, and concluding with a warm wish to reconcile and remain friends. Along the way, they enriched their writing with ambitious vocabulary such as inconsolable, absurd, and reconcile, while using apostrophes for contractions to maintain a warm, informal tone. They also applied subordinating conjunctions like because, when, and if to explain why the Girl acted as she did, helping Fang understand that she only ever intended to look after him.

Team 5 / 6:

This week, Year 5/6 have been making an exciting fairground rides project. As part of our DT work, the children made rotating rides using woodwork and electronic skills. They created frames for an electric motor to sit on, which turned a set of pulleys, making an axle turn. Children designed their own theming and seating arrangements for their ride. We had a lovely afternoon with families who joined us to discover what had been made and were part of the evaluation process. This week culminated with a trip to Paultons Park to witness real rides in action. Everyone had a great day out experiencing the forces and motions we had been talking about both in DT and also as part of our science project on air resistance.

Harvest Festival

A huge thank you to our wonderful Year 2 children for leading such a special Harvest Festival service! 🌾

Despite the weather, we were delighted to come together in school to celebrate harvest. We enjoyed singing our harvest songs, listening to thoughtful readings about how harvest is celebrated around the world, and sharing prayers of thanks for the food we eat and the world we share.

Our Year 2 children spoke so clearly and confidently, sharing their readings and prayers beautifully and helping us all to reflect on the importance of gratitude, kindness and looking after others. We are incredibly proud of them!

A special thank you to Ewan and Reverend Graeme for joining us and sharing some wonderful insights, helping us to think more deeply about harvest and our responsibility to support others in our community and beyond.

We would also like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated food and other essentials to support Southampton City Mission’s Basics Bank. Your generosity will help support people and families in our local community who may be experiencing difficult times.

Our harvest celebration was a wonderful reminder of our school promise in action. Through small acts of kindness and generosity, we really can make a difference.

Me, my community, our world. 🌍

Together, we can show love, take responsibility and help to build a world where everyone is cared for.

Thank you to everyone who helped make our Harvest Festival so special!
