Blossoms, Blizzards and Browsers!

It has been another exciting week of learning across the school! Our Year R children enjoyed exploring nature on a walk around the school grounds, hugging trees and spotting birds and flowers. Year 1/2 became designers and engineers, creating and testing their own sliding mechanisms, evaluating their work and making improvements. Meanwhile, Year 3/4 explored the fascinating world of polar bears through Ice Bear by Nicola Davies, creating colourful mind maps about Arctic habitats, adaptations and the author’s use of language. Year 5/6 focused on online safety, learning about internet trolls and the impact of unkind behaviour online. They designed informative websites to help others stay safe and respond confidently to upsetting online experiences. What a fantastic week of curiosity, creativity and discovery!

Team R:

Team R’s Nature Walk

This week, our Reception children in Team R enjoyed a lovely nature walk around the school grounds! They took time to explore and appreciate the wonderful nature right on our doorstep. The children had fun hugging trees, spotting birds, discovering beautiful flowers and noticing the little details in our outdoor environment.

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature, develop our curiosity and enjoy the fresh air together. We loved seeing the children’s excitement as they explored and discovered the beauty of the natural world around them!

Team 1 / 2:

Year 1/2 Become Designers!

This week, Year 1/2 have been busy becoming designers and engineers as we explored how sliding mechanisms work. We began by looking carefully at sliding mechanisms in children’s books and discovered how moving parts can make a story more exciting and interactive.

We then became designers ourselves! Each of us chose our own background and decided what object we wanted to make slide across it. We thought carefully about whether we wanted our object to move across, up or down our background.

Once we had made our choices, we attached our object to a lolly stick. We then carefully cut a line in our background, either horizontally or vertically, so that our slider could move through the slot. We tested our designs to see whether our mechanisms worked as we had planned.

Of course, being a designer means that things do not always work perfectly the first time! We evaluated our sliders, thought about what worked well and identified anything that could be improved. We then made the necessary changes to make our designs work even better.

We are already thinking about what we could change next time to make our sliders even more successful. What fantastic designers we are becoming!

Team 3 / 4:

Team 3/4 have been diving into the frozen Arctic world of Ice Bear by Nicola Davies. To bring all their reading learning together, the students created vibrant mind maps filled with curved branches, bright colours and quick illustrations. They mapped out everything they discovered about polar bear adaptations like hollow fur and heat-trapping black skin, alongside their harsh Arctic home of freezing blizzards and ice floes. They also explored how mothers protect their cubs in snow dens and how author Nicola Davies uses poetic storytelling paired with factual captions to teach readers about NANUK (the Inuit word for polar bear). Drawing their ideas out visually was a fantastic way for Team 3/4 to deepen their reading comprehension.

Team 5 / 6:

Team 5/6 Learn About Internet Trolls

Team 5/6 have been learning about ‘internet trolls’ and how to stay safe online. They explored what internet trolls are, the impact their behaviour can have on others, and what to do if they encounter unkind or upsetting behaviour online.

To share their learning, the children designed their own websites to inform others about internet trolls, offering helpful advice and guidance on how to respond, report concerns and stay safe online. They should be proud of the thoughtful advice and creative websites they have produced to help others stay safe, kind and confident in the online world.
