Time Travel, Trailblazers & Technicolour!

This week has been packed with creativity, curiosity and hands-on learning across the school. Team R explored cloud shapes and enjoyed wonderfully messy spaghetti-hoop play. Team 1/2 continued their history theme, learning how Florence Nightingale transformed nursing with cleaner, safer hospitals. Team 3/4 became time travellers at Butser Ancient Farm, stepping inside ancient homes and trying activities including jewellery making, archaeology, chalk carving and wattle weaving. Team 5/6 showcased their vibrant pop-art creations, using mixed media to design bold, eye-catching pieces. A fantastic week of discovery, teamwork and imagination—well done, everyone!

Team R:

This week in Year R, we have enjoyed spending lots of time out in the cold sunshine. The children loved exploring the wintery outdoors, cloud spotting and chatting about the shapes drifting across the sky. Our spaghetti hoops sensory tray was set up outside and became a wonderfully messy, hands-on activity that inspired lots of imaginative play and giggles. Each morning, we were greeted by a sparkling visit from Jack Frost, who left delicate icy patterns on the playground and windows. The children were fascinated and enjoyed talking about how frost forms and why everything looked so magical in the early light.

Team 1/2 – Learning About Significant People in History

This week in Team 1/2, the children have continued their work on our history theme: Significant People Who Have Made a Difference. We have been exploring the life and achievements of Florence Nightingale, an important figure whose work changed hospitals and nursing forever.

The children learned that during the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale travelled with a team of nurses to care for wounded soldiers. They discovered that hospitals at the time were dirty, overcrowded, and unsafe. Through discussion, pictures and simple historical sources, the children explored the improvements she introduced; including cleanliness, fresh air, better organisation, and proper handwashing.

We talked about how these changes dramatically reduced the number of infections and saved many lives, which is why Florence Nightingale is remembered as the founder of modern nursing. The children were fascinated by how one determined person could have such a lasting impact, and they enjoyed comparing hospitals “then and now”.

Over the term, we’ll continue to learn about other significant people and think about what makes someone important in history.

Well done, Team 1/2, for your excellent curiosity and thoughtful ideas!

Team 3 / 4:

Time Travelers! Our Thrilling Day at Butser Ancient Farm!

Get ready for an update on our unforgettable school trip! We didn’t just visit a farm—we jumped into a time machine and explored the lives of people from the Iron Age, Bronze Age and Stone Age at Butser Ancient Farm!

We explored amazing reconstructed ancient homes, like the cosy roundhouses and it gave us a real understanding of how different life was without our modern comforts!

Our day was packed with four  brilliant, hands-on activities that taught us ancient skills:

We unleashed our inner artisans by taking part in Jewellery Making, using materials inspired by the past to design and craft a beautiful ring that everyone was proud to take home. We then became real-life archaeologists during the Archaeology Dig, where we carefully used trowels and brushes to search the soil for hidden pieces of pottery and ancient artifacts. Our creative skills were tested with Chalk Carving, where we practiced patience and precision to carve intricate shapes into pieces of local chalk and dye them with pigments from a leaf. Finally, we learned about ancient building methods through Wattle Fence Weaving, working as a fantastic team to twist and interweave flexible hazel branches to build a strong fence section, demonstrating how people created homes using natural materials!

We had a brilliant, educational, and fun day out! A huge THANK YOU to Butser Farm for making history leap off the page! We learned so much about ancient skills and life.

Team 5 / 6:

Over the last few weeks, Year 5/6 have been studying the bright and beautiful world of pop art. As the culmination of their work, the children were given the freedom to produce a piece of inspirational pop art using mixed media. Using a range of pencils, pens, and collage materials, the children created their designs and set to work, making them as vibrant as possible. As you can see from the photos below, creativity was in abundance. We hope you enjoy looking at their work.
