A Scoop of Maths and a Splash of Colour!

This week Team R have been busy exploring identity and creativity by painting self-portraits, mixing skin tones, and observing unique features using mirrors, paints, and pastels.! Team 1/2 explored all the delicious combinations of two-scoop ice creams, using coloured counters to test their mathematical reasoning. Team 3/4 channelled their inner Frida Kahlo, creating stunning half-and-half self-portraits that showcased both skill and personality. Meanwhile, Team 5/6 investigated mixtures, discovering the difference between pure and heterogeneous substances—and enjoyed a colourful Skittles experiment to see science in action! What a wonderfully creative and curious week of learning across the school!

Team R:

Exploring Self-Portraits in YR!

This week, YR had a fantastic time creating self-portraits using mirrors, skin colour paint, and oil pastels. The children looked closely at their reflections, carefully thinking about their unique features. They mixed paint to match their skin tones, paying special attention to the subtle shades that made their portraits come to life. They also spent time choosing the right colours for their eyes and hair, showing real thought and observation. It was a wonderful way for them to explore identity, self-expression, and creativity. The results were absolutely beautiful – each portrait as unique and special as its artist!

Team 1 / 2:

This week, some of our Year 1/2 children have been busy putting their problem-solving skills to work! Their challenge was to find out how many different ways they could make an ice cream with two scoops. Using coloured counters to represent three different flavours, the children worked carefully and systematically to make sure they discovered every possible combination. They showed fantastic teamwork, great thinking, and plenty of excitement along the way — a real treat of a maths lesson!

Team 3 / 4:

Year 3/4 Self-Portraits Inspired by Frida Kahlo

Over the past few weeks, Year 3/4 have been exploring the fascinating world of self-portraits through the lens of renowned artist Frida Kahlo. As part of their final outcome, the children have been refining their artistic techniques, focusing closely on the features of the face and mastering the skill of getting facial proportions just right.

To put their learning into practice, each child was given a photograph of half of their own face. Their challenge? To complete the other half using only their observational skills and the techniques they’ve been working hard to develop. This required real attention to detail and a strong understanding of proportion.

The results were absolutely incredible! Each self-portrait was a unique reflection of the child’s personality and effort, showcasing not only their creativity but also the artistic growth they’ve made throughout the unit. We couldn’t be prouder of the impressive final pieces they produced!

Team 5 / 6:

This week, our Year 5 and 6 scientists have been exploring mixtures and how to separate them. We started by revisiting the three states of matter and then looked at pure substances, as well as homogenous and heterogeneous mixtures. You might even like to give your child a little quiz at home! The highlight of the lesson was observing what happened when Skittles were placed in water — the results were wonderfully colourful and sparked lots of excitement and discussion.
