Team R:
This week in Year R, we have been learning all about God’s Creation. We began by thinking about our wonderful world and sharing the things we love most about it, from animals and flowers to our families and friends. We then listened to the story of Creation and discovered what Christians believe God created on each day. The children enjoyed discussing which day they thought was the most important and explaining their ideas. Finally, we used our imaginations to think about what we would create if we were God. We had some wonderfully creative ideas and thoughtful discussions!
Team 1 / 2:
Exploring God’s Creation
In RE we have been learning about the Christian story of Creation and thinking about the wonderful world God has created. We have talked about the many different animals, plants and living things that make our world so special.
The children enjoyed becoming creators themselves! They designed their own animals made from two different creatures, invented their own plants with imaginative names and explored building and creative activities, including Hama beads.
It has been lovely to see the children’s individual ideas, creativity and imagination shine through as they explored and celebrated the wonderful world around them. We have also been thinking about how we can show care and responsibility for God’s world.
What a creative and joyful start to our learning!
Team 3 / 4:
Exploring Portraits Through the Eyes of Van Gogh
This week, our Year 3 and 4 children have been exploring the wonderful world of Vincent van Gogh, taking inspiration from his expressive portraits and distinctive use of colour.
The children began by looking carefully at Van Gogh’s portraits, noticing how he used bold colours, expressive marks and visible brushstrokes to bring his paintings to life. We talked about how artists can use colour and texture to communicate mood and personality, rather than simply trying to make a portrait look realistic.
The children then had a go at recreating a Van Gogh-inspired portrait, carefully considering the shapes and features of the face before adding their own artistic style.
One of the most exciting techniques we explored was dabbing to add colour. Instead of smoothly colouring the portrait, the children used small dabs and touches of colour to build up texture and create an effect inspired by Van Gogh’s energetic painting style. They experimented with different colours side by side, discovering how individual marks can work together to create a vibrant finished piece.
It was fantastic to see the children becoming increasingly confident with their artistic choices. They showed great concentration as they experimented with colour, texture and mark-making, and each portrait developed its own unique character.
We have been so impressed by the creativity and enthusiasm shown by our Year 3 and 4 artists this week. Their colourful portraits are a wonderful celebration of Van Gogh’s influence and the children’s own imagination!
Team 5 / 6:
In year 5/6 this week, we have been investigating the hypothesis that shadows do not change. The children set up a fair test using a light source, screen and an object to block the light. We then changed the distance between the object and the light source to investigate the resulting changes to the shadow.
