Team R: Love Day
Before half term, we celebrated ‘Love Day’, linking to our values of Love, Joy and Responsibility. In Team R, the children were thinking about what is special to them, and the things which they love. Using heart-shaped grids, the children filled their pages with drawings of people, activities and items that they love. From friends and family, to butterflies and pizza, we loved sharing what’s special to us and learning more each other’s interests. Have a look at their display below!
Team 1 / 2: Telling the Time
Over the past few weeks in Team 1/2 Maths the children have been learning how to tell the time. The Year 1 children have been looking at O’Clock and half past, and the Year 2 children have also been looking at quarter past and quarter to. It has been a challenge that the children have risen to, learning which way round the minute hands and hour hands go, thinking about how many minutes are in half an hour and knowing where to place the hour hand. The children have enjoyed using the little clocks and playing lots of games with their friends to practice. It has been great to see this enthusiasm spill over to home with so many of the children bringing their watches into school to tell the time throughout the day!
Team 3 / 4: Love Day
The children in Team 3/4 had a wonderful time celebrating ‘Love Day’, where we focused on the importance of loving and respecting all people, no matter our differences. We used The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen as a starting point for an anti-bullying discussion, exploring the themes of self-acceptance and kindness. The children participated in freeze-frames to express and discuss the emotions of the main characters, helping them understand the impact of words and actions on others. Our Bible focus was on the story of Jonah and the Whale, which teachers us about forgiveness, compassion, and the importance of showing love to everyone, even when it’s hard or when we feel different. It reminded us that love can heal and bring people together, just as Jonah learned through his journey.
Team 5 / 6: Tomato Transport
In DT this term, Team 5/6 have been set the following challenge: Imagine you are a group of engineers working together on Global Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). You need to find a way to help farmers in Nepal transport their tomatoes down the mountain to market.
Many people in Nepal are farmers and earn their living by selling their produce in the market. However, there are often issues of speed and safety in getting to the markets due to the mountainous terrain. Having a safer and quicker way of getting their produce to the markets could provide families with a more regular income, more food, better health, and allow the children time to go to school. It could improve the livelihoods of a whole community.
Team 5/6 have been challenged to design, make and test a model of a system that can transport tomatoes in a way that won’t squash them! Keep your eyes peeled later in the term for our final models!
