Sharing Stories

This week on the blog: Cars, The Leaf Thief, Reflections, and Mars...

This week on the blog, Team 1/2 share how they celebrated World Book Day, by participating in a live lesson with the creators of ‘The Leaf Thief’, where they listened to the story and created their own illustrations. Check out their drawings below! Meanwhile in Team R, the children have been getting creative, making their own cars using cereal boxes. Across KS2, our classes share their learning in Science from this week - Team 3/4 have been investigating light, whilst Team 5/6 have been learning all about Mars. Keep reading to find out more about the children’s learning across the school this week…

Team R: Crafting Cars

The children in Team R have been developing their wood work skills, carefully sawing pieces of wood to create working wheels for their own cereal box cars! Have a look at photos of the process and their finished products below…

Team 1 / 2: The Leaf Thief

To celebrate World Book Day, Team 1/2 had an exciting live lesson with the author Alice Hemming and Illustrator Nicola Slater, who talked about their book ‘The Leaf Thief’. The children were lucky to listen to the story being read live by the author Alice herself, and were immersed in the story of Squirrel, who works with his friend Bird to find out who among their forest friends has taken the missing leaf. After engaging with the story, the children then joined in a ‘draw-along’ with the illustrator Nicola, who showed the techniques she used to draw the character ‘Squirrel’. We were so impressed with the children’s listening skills, and the illustrations which they produced. The live lesson was a great way for the children to celebrate World Book Day, and engage with a story in a unique way.

Team 3 / 4: Reflections and Visibility

Team 3/4 have been exploring the topic of light, focusing on shadows, transparency, opacity, and reflection. In this particular session, the children investigated which materials reflected light the most effectively, with the goal of determining the best material to add to a school book bag for improved visibility. To carry out the experiment, the children created a card collar for their torches and shone the light onto different materials, observing how well the card collar lit up to measure reflectivity. This hands-on activity combined scientific inquiry with a practical, real-world application.  We hope you like looking at the pictures as much as we did carrying out the test!

Team 5 / 6: An Out of this World Workshop

The children in Team 5/6 were absolutely captivated by the To The Moon and Mars: Mars Day Special Live Interactive Space Show, which they watched online this week alongside other primary schools up and down the country. The live, interactive format kept them on the edge of their seats as they explored the wonders of space and learned about Mars in a fun and engaging way. With real-time questions, polls, and the chance to participate in the show, the students felt like they were part of the journey to the Red Planet. The exciting visuals and fascinating facts about space exploration sparked their imaginations, igniting curiosity and encouraging them to dream big about the future of space travel. It was a memorable experience that brought the mysteries of the universe right into their classrooms!
