Year 3/4 Adventure at Minstead Study Centre in the New Forest
Living Independently
One of the first challenges was making our own beds—no parents to help! We also had to prepare our own lunches every day, which was trickier than we thought (but still fun). It felt great to take responsibility for ourselves!
Exploring Nature
River & Pond Dipping
We put on our wellies and used nets to search for creatures in the water. Finding dragonfly nymphs, tadpoles, and even small fish was amazing! We learned how clean water supports different species.
Forest Hike: Three Habitats
We trekked through the New Forest to explore three different habitats:
- Woodland – Tall trees, rustling leaves, and hidden animal tracks.
- Bog – A squelchy, wet area full of special plants that love damp ground.
- Heathland – Open land with heather and gorse, home to birds that live on the ground.
Mammal Trapping (Humane, of course!)
We set up special traps to see which small mammals visited at night. The next morning, we carefully checked them—we may not have found much but it was exciting to set the traps and see…
Survival Skills
Fire Lighting
Using flint and steel, we learned how to start a fire—just like real explorers! We also discussed fire safety and why it’s important to respect nature.
Shelter Building
Working in teams, we used a tarpaulin, four ropes; branches and leaves to build shelters. Would they keep us dry in the rain? Some were definitely stronger than others!
Orienteering Around Minstead
We followed maps to navigate around the study centre’s grounds. It was like a treasure hunt—only instead of gold, we found letters and a sense of achievement!
Campfire in the Roundhouse
One of the highlights was gathering in an authentic roundhouse for a campfire. We sang fun action songs. The flickering firelight made it feel like we’d stepped back in time!
Forest Names & Environmental Art
Each of us received a wooden badge with our special forest name (like “Fox” or “Oak”). We researched our names in our Minstead journals and created environmental art using leaves, twigs, and stones.
Being Brave & Staying Away from Home
For some of us, this was the first time sleeping away from family. There were a few nervous moments, but we supported each other and had so much fun that soon, any homesickness faded away. By the end, we felt proud of ourselves for being so independent!
Memories to Last a Lifetime
Our trip to Minstead wasn’t just about learning—it was about teamwork, courage, and discovering the wonders of nature. We returned with muddy boots, tired smiles, and stories we’ll never forget.
Would we do it again? Absolutely!
