Rock, paper, Science!

We loved seeing all of your costumes for our careers dress up day last week. Check out the fantastic outfits from some of the jobs represented in our featured image. Thank you to everybody who was able to donate and the Young Governors are hoping to put the money towards a worthy cause - new play equipment for the playground! You can learn more from about about what we have been up to around the school on our weekly blog right here.

Year R: Whatever Next?

This week, we have been using ‘Whatever Next’ in our learning.  We saw how Baby Bear roared up to the moon in his homemade rocket.  Mrs Garrod showed us a video of the first men to land on the moon just like Baby Bear and we looked at photographs and videos taken on the moon’s surface.  Some of us made rockets and moon buggies that looked like the buggies on the moon.  We also dropped ‘asteroids’ onto a floury ‘moon surface’ to see how the craters on the moon were made.

Mrs Hannam has been working hard with her class on building strength with large drawings and exercises.  Zach, in Ash class, was keen to experiment with lolly sticks to explore the sounds they made when he twanged them.  When the stick was short it made a more squeaky sound.  When he listened to a thick stick and a thin stick, he found out that the thick stick made a lower sound.  In Art we carried on with the winter theme and created trees using sticks, making sure we put the thick and thin sticks in the correct places to create a realistic effect..

Year 1 / 2: Great Fire of London production

Year 1 / 2 had the pleasure of being a part of an action packed morning presenting the story of The Great Fire of London! The children had dedicated roles given by the professionals and had lots of fun bringing their characters to life. They worked with professional actors from The Rainbow Theatre Production company on a small part of the Great Fire of London story which they then put together to perform as one big production. The children showed great dedication to their roles and particularly enjoyed working with all the interesting props. What a brilliant show it was!

Year 3 / 4: Science Rocks!

Once again, the fabulous team from the science department of Mountbatten School visited us here at Rownhams. After a brief introduction by Mrs. Peacock and Mr. Gentle, the Year 3/4 students split into three different workshop activity groups. Each activity involved hands-on experiments aimed at enhancing the children’s understanding of rocks and soils.

One of the experiments involved identifying various types of rocks by testing their permeability and hardness. Children gently squirted water onto the rocks and made observations, while also using a scraper to investigate their durability. They then utilized a rock identification sheet to determine the type and name of the rock they were studying.

Another activity involved examining different types of soil under a microscope. The children observed the various crystals and minerals present in the soil and even had the opportunity to handle real fossils discovered in sedimentary rock.

The third activity focused on using dark, milk, and white chocolate to demonstrate the process of how metamorphic rock is formed. After pouring chocolate powder into a plastic cup, the groups submerged the cup into warm water and applied pressure with a second cup. The combination of heat and pressure solidified the powder, mimicking the natural formation of rock deep underground. This process even produced distinct layers due to the different types of chocolate.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon and gained valuable knowledge in a short span of time. Many thanks to the Mountbatten science department for organising this fantastic event

Year 5 / 6: Exciting Writing

Wolf Brother, the story of a boy and wolf cub, bound together on a journey, is the inspiration for a newspaper report that Year 5/6 are preparing to write. In order to write gripping and exciting articles, we have been exploring grammatical techniques used by newspaper reporters. Do you know how to use parenthesis, write with passive voice or use perfect verb forms? Well, Year 5/6 have been working hard to get to grips with all of these. Here are some examples of how well the children managed to select the past perfect or present perfect continuous tense when writing!
