Spectacular Science

This week, Year 5/6 were excited to have Mountbatten school visit and deliver an out of this world Science lesson. The children spent two hours learning all about space, and even had the chance to perform a few spectacular experiments! We are very lucky to have Mountbatten return to the hall again next Wednesday afternoon during our Open Classrooms, so you can see their amazing demonstrations for yourself! Elsewhere across the school, the Science theme continued as Year R, inspired by their reading book, explored the skulls and teeth of different animals. Year 3/4 engaged in an active activity to simulate the physics of water flowing through rivers, whilst Year 1/2 have been broadening their culinary experiences by sampling different vegetables in D&T

Year R: Sorting skulls

We were so inspired by our last week’s book ‘Nibbles the Book Monster’ that we looked at the different ways animals nibble, crunch, catch and chomp their food. We talked about what cows, elephants, lions, fish, eagles, frogs and crocodiles eat. We looked at the skulls of these animals and matched the features of the skulls to the animal. The elephant was easy as it has huge tusks. We could see that crocodiles have rows of super pointy teeth and many of us remembered that Simba had large canines in The Lion King. We also practiced our cutting skills when sorting which skull went with which animal. In Art, we thought about what the different parts of trees look like, from the thick tall trunk, through the more twisty thinner branches to the thin, short twigs. We also enjoyed riding our balance bikes around the playground. Some of us were using the glide skills we have learnt. Others were tackling tricky balance skills.

Year 1 / 2: Vegetable exploration

Embarking on a culinary journey in Design and technology, our Year 1/2 children recently dove into the world of vegetables, igniting their taste buds in the name of couscous creativity. The classroom transformed into a vibrant testing ground as our young chefs sampled an array of veggies, from crunchy carrots to juicy tomatoes! With wide eyes and eager smiles, they bravely explored flavors and textures, determining their veggie favorites. This hands-on approach not only sparked a love for wholesome foods, but also laid the foundation for a future of nutritious eating. Stay tuned as these pint-sized chefs bring their newfound veggie wisdom to the couscous planning table!

Year 3 / 4: Around the riverbend!

By holding hands and moving around a cone, the children learned about the physics of water moving around a meander in a river. The water closest to the inside of the bend moves slower than the water on the outside of the bend. We then used this understanding to discuss how erosion and deposition make the appearance of the near and far side of the bend so different (beach area and cliff area). The children wrote explanations and drew pictures to show their understanding. Meanwhile, in Maths, Year 3 / 4 have been investigating the properties of shapes. They made their own shapes and found out ow many vertices (corners), edges, and faces they had. The children were really excited to make their own shapes – we even had pentagonal prisms and pyramids!

Year 5 / 6: Space exploration workshop

Our little space explorers in Years 5 and 6 had a science lesson that was out of this world when Moutbatten visited for a space workshop. There were activities that looked at our solar system, including how and why days and years vary on different planets, and also how scientists can see what is happening in space using a range of telescope types. Two demonstrations went off with a bang when they learnt what happens when hydrogen is ignited and ethanol was used to power rockets. One member of Year 5/6 was over the moon to be dressed up in a genuine cosmonaut space suit – even if it was very hot and heavy!
